ZF LIFETEC is committed to achieving industry-leading performance in decarbonization and environmental sustainability, as well as delivering in other critical areas such as waste reduction and water management.
ZF LIFETEC has set ambitious targets to reduce Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions by 80% by 2030 and aims to be climate neutral across all scopes (1 to 3) by 2040, measured in CO2 equivalents (CO2e).
In our value chain, we are continuously searching for innovative ways to reduce emissions by using more sustainable materials, reducing upstream emissions, and developing technologies that require less production materials and energy. In addition, ZF LIFETEC invests in direct and indirect sustainability initiatives, e.g., new heating concepts at our sites. These investments aim at further reducing emissions permanently and limiting resource usage.
In 2023, ZF LIFETEC increased its share of green electricity to 19% and believes to be on track to achieve a 100% share of green electricity by 2025. By continuing to replace fossil fuels with renewable alternatives, we are progressively reducing the emissions linked to energy consumption and operations. Between 2022 and 2023 we achieved a 2% improvement in energy efficiency in each year. The improvement is a direct result of initiatives and contract conversions under our Green Power Roadmap. These efforts demonstrate our dedication to reducing the energy required for our operations, keeping us among the leaders in energy intensity metrics in our peer group.
The Circular Economy forms an important part of our sustainability strategy, this is why ZF LIFETEC is continually improving its waste management processes. Thus, waste management and recycling play an important role for ZF LIFETEC. ZF LIFETEC is dedicated to continuously improving its waste management, achieving both ecological and economic benefits. ZF LIFETEC has consistently achieved a high overall recycling rate of more than 80% over the last three years. Our goal is to reduce our total waste for disposal by 1% on an annual basis (measured in tons per million euros of revenue), with particular attention being placed on the reduction of hazardous waste.
ZF LIFETEC believes that the best way to handle waste is to not create it. Therefore, ZF LIFETEC has implemented various initiatives aimed at reducing overall resource consumption and creating financial advantages through lower procurement volumes of raw materials. These efforts also help in reducing embedded carbon.
ZF LIFETEC believes that sustainable production and sustainable waste management can achieve both ecological and economic benefits.
Another priority for ZF LIFETEC is responsible management of water consumption. Although ZF LIFETEC's production is generally not water-intensive, the company remains committed to protecting the environment through conscious production.
Most water consumption at ZF LIFETEC is related to sanitary purposes and is withdrawn from municipalities. A small number of ZF LIFETEC’s sites uses water for machine cooling or in plating processes. Despite the minor importance of water usage in the production of passive safety systems, ZF LIFETEC is mindful of its impact and has a dedicated target to conserve scarce resources as part of its sustainability strategy. Especially in water-stress areas, ZF LIFETEC aims to reduce water consumption and minimize the environmental impact.
Our main target is to reduce water consumption overall by reducing water withdrawal (in m³ per million euros of revenue) by 1% annually in non-water stress areas and by 2% annually in water-stress areas.
To measure this, we estimate water consumption based on the difference between water withdrawal and water discharge.
